Cider

Postby MissJames on Tue Sep 09, 2014 1:43 pm

I hear there is a stupid simple way to make cider.

I just picked a bag full of apples and put them through my juicer.

Poured it into some bottles and now keeping them for a few weeks until they ferment.

Nothing added, stupid simple.

If I leave it too long it will be cider vinegar.

Thoughts.

Most juicers heat up the juice to the point that it's sterilized, so you need to introduce yeast. Stirring the juice a few times a day until you see bubbles will help incorporate any yeast in the air, and keep mold from forming on the top.

That method should work, though you're likely to get a very low alcohol beverage that may have strong vinegar or sour notes. That isn't the same as saying it won't taste good, but you'll probably want to keep an open mind to the first few sips.

If you put the mashed apple back in then there is yeast on the surface?

This stuff Im making is more cider vinegar but still dont really understand the difference?

Is it just a matter of time?

Are you trying to make apple cider vinegar, or an alcohol-containing apple cider?
